<p><big>The winner, Ryan Benson, was able to lose a <strong>staggering 122 pounds!</strong></big></p>

<p><big><strong>So how is Ryan Benson doing these days?</strong></big></p>

<p>A recent article in Time magazine looked at some of the former <em>Biggest Loser</em> winners. <strong>Benson gained back close to 90 pounds after the show was over.</strong></p>

<p>But while the message of the show is inspiring, it is also unrealistic. <em>The Biggest Loser</em> achieves rapid transformations—contestants often drop more than 9 kg in a week—through calorie restriction, endless exercise and no small amount of dehydration that occurs behind the scenes. Ryan Benson, 38, an actor who works for a DVD distributor in Los Angeles, lost 55 kg to win the first season in January 2005 but says he regained 14.5 kg within five days simply by drinking water. </p>
<p>Matt Hoover, 31, a motivational speaker based in Seattle, had a 7-kg rebound within a day of winning Season 2. Last season&#8217;s runner-up, Kai Hibbard, 28, an aerobics instructor in Alaska who says she spent the night before her final weigh-in hopping in and out of a sauna for six hours, consumed only sugar-free Jell-O for several days and wolfed down asparagus, which is a natural diuretic. &#8220;It&#8217;s amazing the things you learn in a weight-loss competition,&#8221; she says.</p></blockquote>
<p>Benson said that as soon as the show was over, he regained <strong>&#8220;14.5 kg [32 pounds] in 5 days simply by drinking water.&#8221; </strong>So, what does this tell you?! It points to the fact that when anyone rapidly loses weight, (faster than 1-2 pounds a week) usually the weight loss is mostly due to <em>water loss</em>.</p>
<p>Also, the contestants in the show are exercising (with a trainer) between 4-5 hours a day. This creates a dramatic loss of water in their body!</p>
<p>Another factor is that they are on television, held accountable by the millions of viewers and (of course) a huge monetary prize at the end.</p>

<p><big>Calories are simply units of measure. They don’t really exist as “things” in and of themselves; they are labels, just how an inch really isn’t anything, except as a measurement of the distance between two points.</big></p>
<p><strong>So, what do calories measure? </strong></p>
<p>One thing: they measure energy. That’s it. Nothing so evil; just a measurement of energy. </p>
<p>This is important because the body itself, despite its amazing structure and functions does not really do a very intelligent job of distinguishing “good” energy from “bad”. </p>
<p>Really, the body doesn’t care about where the energy comes from. Let’s look at food choices.</p>
<p>When we shop, with the almost unlimited of varieties of foods available—there seems to be a fair awareness of what’s good food, and what is bad or junk food. </p>
<p>We all know, of course that an apple is a “good” food, whereas a plate of nacho chips with lots of cheese is a “bad” food. And, while nachos are not bad tasting, you won’t find many fit people eating a plate of nachos, for obvious reasons. </p>
<p><strong>So what does this have to do with calories and energy?</strong> </p>
<p>It’s this: while you and I can determine our choices of food and say that something (like an apple) is a reasonably healthy source of energy, and something else (like a plate of nachos) is an unhealthy source of energy, the body can’t determine this. </p>
<p>It may sound strange and amazing, but your body really doesn’t <em>care</em> either! To your body, energy is just energy. It takes what it gets. Without “thinking about it”.</p>
<p>So if we apply this to the body and to weight gain, when the body receives a calorie—which, as we now know, is just a name for energy—it must DO something with that energy. </p>
<p>So, putting all other nutrients and minerals aside, if an apple delivers 100 calories to the body, it has to accept those 100 calories. The same goes for 1,500 calories from a plate of nachos… those 1,500 calories have to be dealt with. </p>
<p>Next, the body does two things to that energy: it will either metabolizes it via anabolism (convert the energy (calories) into cells/tissue), or it will metabolizes it via catabolism (use that energy (calories) to break down cells).</p>
<p><strong>Do you see now how the link between calories/energy, metabolism, and weight loss becomes rather clear and direct?</strong></p>
<p>In your body, when there is an excess of energy, and the body can’t use this energy to deal with any needs at the time, <em>it will be forced to create cells with that extra energy.</em></p>
<p>Even though the body may not want to, after realizing that the energy can’t be used to do anything (such as help you exercise or digest some food), it will turn it into cells through anabolism. </p>
<p><strong>And what are those extra cells?</strong> Yes&#8230; added weight! </p>
<p>To sum up, the whole calorie/metabolism/weight gain thing is really just about&#8230; <em>excess energy!</em></p>
<p>When there’s too much energy from food, i.e., too many calories in the body— then the body transforms those calories. </p>
<p><strong>And, most of the time, it is fat.</strong></p>

<p><big>These days heart disease is a main concern for most people, but they are unaware of the actual causes of heart disease. There are several major reasons why someone would develop a heart condition. It’s important to know the facts since heart disease is the number one killer of people.</big></p>
<p>The main role in the development of heart disease is genetics. Some people can still have a healthy heart even if they eat what they want, smoke, and even avoid physical activity at all costs. It’s unfair, but it happens.</p>
<p>However, most people aren’t so lucky. If you have a family history of heart disease, you’re more likely to develop heart disease—especially if you don’t lead a healthy lifestyle.</p>
<p>The most common cause of heart disease is coronary artery disease. This is a narrowing or even a blockage of the blood vessels. This basically puts a strain on the heart and can even cause the heart to be cut off from the blood supply. If this happens to the blood vessels in the heart, it could possibly result in a heart attack.</p>
<p>Another source of heart disease is trouble with the valves of your heart. Your heart has valves inside it that help to keep blood flowing in one direction and prevents blood from flowing back to another chamber. If this part of the heart is damaged, this may cause heart disease.</p>
<p>Diabetes (a very common disease I see in my office daily!) is another major contributor to heart disease in adults. Anyone with Type 2 diabetes has a higher risk of developing heart disease. Unfortunately, by the time someone has been diagnosed with this illness, it’s possible he or she already has atherosclerosis.</p>
<p>What that means is that he or she will be more likely to have heart disease and has an increased risk of heart attack. The fact of the matter is that diabetics have twice the risk of heart problems as people who don’t have blood sugar problems.</p>
<p>One of the best ways to prevent or help your heart become healthier is to lose excess weight. A successful weight loss program, like the one at <em>Plymouth Hypnosis Center</em> is usually the answer.</p>

<p><strong>HERE’S WHAT HAPPENS DURING EXERCISE:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Exercising starts a process where fat molecules leave the fat cells.</li>
<li><em>If you have enough muscle</em>, and your muscle needs energy, and it has the fat-burning enzymes, the fat molecule will move to the muscle and burn off!</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>That’s how you burn fat.</strong></p>
<p>Of course, if you don’t have enough muscle tissue, that fat molecule will wander around and return to its fat storage cells. Nothing happens and you stay fat.</p>

<p><strong> OTHER BENEFITS</strong></p>
<p>Of course, being “in shape” with exercise has some added benefits!</p>
<p><strong> First, you’ll look better. </strong>Clothes will fit the way they should and you’ll look great.</p>
<p><strong>Second, you’ll feel better.</strong> Seriously, lose even 10 pounds of fat and your whole body will thank you. If you need to lose 30 or more, your body will feel young again.</p>
<p><strong>Third, you’ll be stronger.</strong> You can do things that weren’t possible before — like playing a sport, running with your dog, lifting your child or grandchild!</p>
<p><strong> Fourth, you may live longer</strong>. You may reduce the possibility of diabetes (or if you have it already, you may become health- ier), lower your blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and take the weight off your knees and back. (Check with your personal physician before changing any medications!)</p>

<p>Do you eat and eat and eat that chocolate until it&#8217;s all gone — every last bit — and then kick yourself afterwards saying that you&#8217;ll never do that again?</p>
<p>But, you do&#8230;?</p>
<p><strong>So, are you addicted to chocolate?</strong></big></p>
<p>First, let me say that I truly believe that most people bandy about the word &#8220;addiction&#8221; way too much. I even wrote an article on this site debunking the &#8220;fact&#8221; that <a href="http://www.plymouthhypnosis.com/is-nicotine-more-addictive-than-heroin" target=_blank>nicotine is as addictive as heroin</a>.</p>
<p>Many times, a weight loss client will say that she&#8217;s &#8220;addicted to food&#8221;, which I always find a bit odd. I mean, we all have to eat food or we die. You need to eat, so eating is not an addiction.</p>
<p>The &#8220;addiction&#8221; is just the excuse for bad eating behavior.</p>
<p><strong>And, fortunately, with hypnosis you can change your bad eating habits and behaviors!</strong></p>

<p>A true addiction is where your body will start having physical withdrawals from the substance. And, let me tell you that if you stop eating chocolate (all kidding aside), you will not have withdrawal symptoms. You will not die.</p>

<p><strong>It&#8217;s a compulsion.</strong></p>
<p>A compulsion is where you are getting pleasure and pain from the same action. Eating too much chocolate is a compulsion. Watching too much TV is a compulsion. Smoking is a compulsion.</p>
<p>So, how can you easily fix eating too much chocolate? Get hypnotized. Really. It works and I have the proof in my office!</p>
<p>The cravings are in your mind and hypnosis will help you create the change you deserve. It&#8217;s easy and almost effortless. And, <em>you&#8217;ll lose weight in the process!</em></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><big>Did you ever wonder why you hear this so often? It’s because of water!</big><br />
<br /><br />
It wasn’t the amazing weight loss center, or their magical scales or the  “delicious” meals they tell you to buy (costing you around $5,000- $6000 a year!!). It was the water they drank. Lots and <em>lots</em> of water.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">You (yes, you!)  probably don’t drink enough water. Most people don’t, but you need to.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Why? <strong>Because you need to metabolize the fat in your body.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">One of the main functions of the liver is to convert stored fats onto energy. But, if the kidneys are not getting enough water to work properly, the liver will need to step in and pick up the slack — which takes away from its main function, converting that fat into energy.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So, drink less water and store more fat. It’s an easy equation.<br />
<br /><br />
<big><strong>&#8220;But, This Is Too Hard To Do!&#8221;</strong></big></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">One of the easiest ways to lose about 10 pounds is to start drinking water. Is that really so hard to do? Of course, you’ll be running to the bathroom constantly, but after a few weeks your body will become accustomed to the water and you won’t be running so often.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">This is because your body will not have to retain the water anymore because it “knows” that it’ll get hydrated! (Your body is very smart.) You see, your body was in “survival mode” — it didn’t know when or if it was going to get its necessary water. So, after a week or so, the water it had been retaining is flushed out of the system. (Usually 8-10 pounds of water!)<br />
<br /><br />
<big><strong>Some Additional Benefits to Drinking Water</strong></big></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Did you know that drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will also help you look and feel younger? Drinking water will:</p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Flush out impurities in your skin, improving your complexion.</li>
<li>Hydrate your skin (filling in those wrinkles and sagging skin).</li>
<li>Improve your muscle tone (you need this water if you are lifting weights).</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: left;">
<br /><br />
<big><strong>How Much Water Should You Drink?</strong></big></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>Now, check with your personal physician first, as this is in no way medical advice.</em> The average person should drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. And, for every 25 pounds you are overweight, an additional 8 ounces.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Most of my clients carry a water bottle around with them to remind themselves to drink the water. (I know one guy who just fills up a one-gallon container and sips from it throughout the day.)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Oh… coffee is not water. Tea is not water, Juice is not water. Soda… get it? Water. Add a slice of lemon, if you want some flavor.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>And, one more thing:</strong> Stop drinking about three hours before bedtime. <img src='http://www.plymouthhypnosis.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Food is like a drug. It changes how you feel — just like a drug does. In hypnotism, we call this &#8220;changing your state&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>Now you can change your state a number of different ways! You can:</strong></p>
<li>Take a powerful narcotic.</li>
<li>Read a good book.</li>
<li>Watch a funny movie.</li>
<li>Eat an apple pie with vanilla bean ice cream!</li>
<p><br /><br /><em><strong>Right?</strong></em></p>
<p>Of course, that last one is no good because you&#8217;ll just kick yourself for doing it, rationalize that the diet you&#8217;re on isn&#8217;t working and, well, &#8220;&#8230;what the heck? <em>Since I blew that diet I might as well eat more!</em>&#8220;</p>

<p>And, they are just incredulous about the fact that they eat — on the average — one meal a day&#8230; and they keep gaining weight!</p>

<p>Well, if you think about it, this is very easy to understand. Your body is very, very smart. It knows how to regulate itself.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">So imagine that you are feeding your body less food. What does your body do to cope and survive? <em>It lowers your metabolism!</em></p>
